History of the University of Leipzig
Founded on 2 December 1409, the University of Leipzig is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was established by scholars and students who had left the University of Prague, with the formal founding ceremony held in the Augustinian monastery of St Thomas in Leipzig.
Over the centuries, the university became an important centre of scholarship. Among its notable historical milestones are the Leipzig Disputation of 1519, which involved Martin Luther, Andreas Karlstadt and Johannes Eck; the establishment of the University Library in the sixteenth century; and the opening of the world's first institute for experimental psychology by Wilhelm Wundt in 1879.
The historic Augusteum was rebuilt in the nineteenth century. Much of the university's central campus was destroyed during the Second World War. The present campus at Augustusplatz combines contemporary university buildings with architectural references to the former university complex. The Neues Augusteum was presented to the public in 2011, and the Paulinum – Aula und Universitätskirche St. Pauli was officially opened in 2017.
Today, the University of Leipzig continues a tradition of research and teaching spanning more than six centuries.
